Windows 10 And Fluent Design System

Today Microsoft has made Fluent Design System, earlier codenamed as "Project NEON", officially public to the app developers and Windows enthusiasts. Fluent Design is a new modern approach for Windows towards improving the overall app design and user experience on Windows 10 and its Store apps.

According to Microsoft, FDS has 5 key elements each of which are summarised below.

Material (Acrylic)

Acrylic is a new type of background that is most commonly present now around Windows 10. It provides a subtle effect to the app background and being a bit transparent it also reflects the "Glass" effect Microsoft's Windows 7 design theme "Aero"

The Settings app features Acrylic in the sidebar, Microsoft Edge features Acrylic in its title bar. You can also find Acrylic in Paint 3D and the Skype UWP app.

Calculator, Photos, and Maps are also apps where you can find Acrylic elements. The Calculator app is easily the best-looking app with Acrylic on Windows 10 right now. Microsft is planning to bring Acrylic to more areas of Windows 10 throughout 2018.

REVEAL (Light)

This is a completely new feature, unlike any previous Windows Design. The reveal effect adds a little light to the hidden borders present around lists and columns when the mouse hovers around them.

Currently reveal lies in most of the Action Center, Start Menu, Settings app, My People Hub, Mail and some other areas. It is becoming much prominent with each insider build in 2018 and soon will be present across the whole OS.

Rather than being viewed as a one time change to the Windows Environment, Fluent Design System is a journey to make Windows more modern, intuitive, and a satisfying experience for the users.
