Microsoft held a global event on 2 May, 2017.The main headline of this event was the announcement of Chrome OS competitor "Windows 10 S".Now you may be wondering that it is new version of Microsoft Windows but it ain't. Here is everything you need to know.

Windows 10S is a lightweight and a much polished version of Windows 10 that is mainly made by Microsoft for Educational purposes. Microsoft describes that it is streamlined for superior performance and security. But if we dig a little deeper, there is a strategic move too. Windows 10S is Microsoft's answer to Google's Chrome OS that is also made for education firms.
When compared side by side, there are several differences in the 10S that you may not find in the normal Windows.
1. Only Windows store apps
Windows 10S won't allow the users to install apps from the internet as it only supports Windows store apps. Now this may be problematic for a common user because many users use popular applications like Chrome, Adobe apps that are not yet available in Windows store. Microsoft has promised to push its Office suite and various other popular apps in the Store by the second half of this year.
2. Defaults can't be changed
Windows 10S can't be used by the user to change its default applications like Browser, Video player etc. Hence it will give a complete stock Windows feel every time you use the device.
Microsoft is also locking down Microsoft Edge to only work with its Bing search engine in Windows 10 S. That means you won’t be able to switch to Google search to easily type in queries in the address bar or elsewhere, and you’ll have to access the search service through Google.com.

According to Microsoft, Windows 10 S will give much tighter security as the apps will only be downloaded and installed from Windows App Store hence ensuring a greater level of security for the machines.
Also, Windows 10S will have much faster Login and app launch times as the unnecessary apps won't stand their chance out in the background that were installed by the users and thus enhancing the Battery life too.
→ Along with this Microsoft will be offering any genuine Windows 10S user to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro for just $49 or ₹3150 if he or she finds it difficult to adjust with the new Windows.
WHICH ONE SHOULD I CHOOSE ?
Well, Windows 10S isn't something special for a common user except Education chains and firms that provide their students with such devices. Windows 10S is mainly Microsoft's Step to compare Windows with Chrome OS.
Windows 10 S is Microsoft’s latest attempt at trying to move Windows to a more modern environment.
